To be eligible for the Self-Employed Persons Program, you must meet the definition of Self-employed person as per “IRPR s88(1)” someone who has relevant experience and has intention and ability to be self-employed in Canada and to make a significant contribution to specified economic activities in Canada. These include cultural activities, athletics or purchase and management of a farm. Some of the examples of occupations that are included in these categories are: music teachers, painters, film-makers, coaches, trainers and many more. The eligibility criteria include:
- Two 1-year periods of full-time work experience in an eligible role in the last 5 years, two one-year period of experience in participation at a world class level in eligible role or combination of one year period of experience in self-employment in eligible role and one year experience at a world level in eligible role.
- Minimum point score 35 out of 100 points.
- Intention & ability can be proven through business plan, experience, exploratory visits, finances
Start-Up Business Class

The Start-Up Visa Program is a great opportunity for you to develop your business idea, get funding from Canadian business incubators, angel investor group or venture capital fund organizations that have experience with starts up and can provide essential resources.
The Start-Up business is a great way for you to start your new business in Canada and contribute to the Canadian economy. In order to be eligible for the Start-Up business class, you must:
- Have a qualifying business idea
- Get a Letter of Support from designated angel group or venture capital fund or business incubator
- Minimum financial commitment of $200,000 from venture capital fund or $75,000 from angel investor or acceptance into a business incubator program
- Meet the program's language requirements of CLB 5+ in English or French
