Canada Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP)
If you are a recent graduate of a Canadian post-secondary institution, you may be eligible for a Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP). With a PGWP, you can gain valuable Canadian work experience and apply for permanent residence through one of the many programs available. This program is considered to be one of the most lucrative ways to explore different Canadian immigration options for students.
A post-graduation work permit may be issued based on the length of the study program for a minimum of 8 months up to a maximum of 3 years.
The Post Graduate Work Permit program is an open work permit. This program allows you to work with any company or employer in Canada. This also means that you can change your employer easily if needed.
Requirements for PGWP Permits
For the PGWP work permit, you will need to fulfill the following criteria for eligibility:
- The student must be over 18 years of age.
- Only study programs in Designated Learning Institutions (DLI) can apply. The institution may be a university, training school, college, CEGEP (Quebec), or another institute with a DLI status.
- The study program should be at least 8 months in duration.
- The educational program must also offer some sort of academic qualification. This means that the programs can lead to a diploma, degree, or certification for any given field.
- If applying to a private school, this permit can only be acquired when pursuing an Associate, Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctorate degree.
- In the case of a private school, the institute must have the necessary provincial authorization.
- The students must fulfill any other criteria set forth by the IRCC.
Additional student-specific requirements include:
- Have graduated from a participating Canadian post-secondary institution
- Have studied full-time for at least eight months (two semesters)
- Have maintained valid student status during your studies
- Apply for your work permit within 90 days of receiving your final marks
- Have graduated with a diploma, degree, certificate, or credential from a participating Canadian post-secondary institution
