Permanent Resident Card (PR card)
The permanent resident card (PR card) is the official proof of the person's status as a permanent resident in Canada. Permanent residents (PR) of Canada must carry and show their valid permanent resident card (PR card) or permanent resident travel document (PRTD) when boarding a flight to Canada, or traveling to Canada on any other commercial carrier. PR card has a validity of 5 years when its issued and it is your responsibility to make sure the PR card is valid when you return from travel outside Canada and to apply for a new PR card before your current card expires.

To be eligible for a PR card, a person must:

  • be a permanent resident of Canada
  • be physically present in Canada
  • meet the residency requirement (must have been physically present in Canada for a minimum of 730 days within the past 5 years)
  • not be under an effective removal order
  • not be convicted of an offense related to the misuse of a PR card

The permanent resident travel document (PRTD) is a temporary official document proving the person’s status as a permanent resident in Canada.

If a person is outside Canada and doesn’t have their PR card to return, then a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) is required from a visa application Centre or Canada visa office. It proves to transportation companies that a person is allowed to travel to Canada as a permanent resident if a person doesn’t have a valid PR card.
